What Moves Steel Prices in India

Corner Angle Metal Corporation · Updated October 2026

Steel prices in India can change every week. Knowing what drives them helps you decide when to buy and how much to keep in stock. Here are the main factors buyers watch.

1. Raw material costs

Steel is made mainly from iron ore and coking coal, and India imports most of its coking coal. When global coal or iron ore prices rise, mill costs rise, and prices usually follow within weeks.

2. Demand at home

Infrastructure, construction, automobiles, appliances and capital goods are the big users. Strong government spending on roads, railways and housing supports demand. Construction slows during the monsoon, so demand for long products and some flat products often softens from about June to September.

3. Global prices and imports

When international steel prices are low, especially when large producers export more, cheaper imports can pull Indian prices down. Trade measures such as safeguard or anti-dumping duties can limit this effect.

4. Mill price announcements

Large integrated mills revise their list prices regularly, often at the start of the month. Distributors and traders adjust their rates after these announcements.

5. Currency and freight

A weaker rupee makes imported raw materials and imported steel more expensive. Fuel and freight costs also affect the delivered price, especially for orders going to other states.
